William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare. Learnard was born in Fairfax, Vermont on November 14, 1832, and died in Lawrence, Kansas on November 6, 1911. He was an attorney, Civil War veteran, a newspaper publisher, and an organizer of Burlington, Kansas.
